Almost 28,000 students attend the coeducational state university at Mount Pleasant. The Central Michigan University is the fourth largest in the state. There are also off site campuses in other states and countries. The choice of subjects here is extensive and there 27 degree courses across eight academic sectors. Degree courses and programs include bachelor, master, specialist and doctoral levels.

The different disciplines are Business Administration, Communication and Fine Arts, Education and Human Services, Health Professions, Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Science and Technology. There are also departments for Graduate Studies. In all, there are 50 doctoral programs and 55 masters level programs available at the Central Michigan University. The Departments covering History, Mathematics and Psychology all offer programs for PhD students. The campus contains a wonderful resource in the Charles V. Park Library. The library, which is open to the public, contains one million books and also has computer terminals.

Athletic life is also important to the staff and students at Central Michigan University and there are excellent facilities, both indoor and outdoor. Several teams represent the university including teams for football, diving, swimming and baseball. There is even a facility if a student sustains an injury whilst participating in sport or fitness. The Injury Care Center has first aid, rehabilitation and taping services and is staffed by qualified experts. There is also a 12-lane Bowling Center and a Disc Golf Course.

Accommodation for students is of a high standard and there are 22 residence halls on campus. Nearby Mount Pleasant offers a relaxing break from studies at Central Michigan University and there are seven city parks, large stores, boutiques and restaurants. The list of alumni contains several well known personalities, including a number of sporting stars. Actors Jeff Daniels and Larry Joe Campbell were also students.
